Wend Magazine’s article, Ten Endangered Rivers That Still Have a Chance, posted by “peter.” (Note: the Sacramento-San Joaquin river system tops the list!)

A tour of the nation’s most endangered rivers—even on paper—is a sobering trip. The conservation group American Rivers today released a list of the top ten rivers in trouble all over America and the variety of locations is rivaled only by the types of threats facing these rivers—from floods to sewage to encroaching highways.

According to the organization, the report focuses on the “rivers facing the most uncertain futures rather than those suffering from the worst chronic problems.” So you won’t see the Hudson on the list year after year, but instead several rivers in danger of becoming the next urban-pollution archetype.

In this case, the Sacramento River, in California seems most likely to take the torch from the Hudson. Topping the top ten list, the Sacramento faces collapse after becoming the drinking water source for 26 million people and seeing one of the most diverse salmon runs in the country trickle to nearly nothing.

But, like the rest of the rivers on the list, the Sacramento is included because it is at a possible turning point. This could also be an opportunity to improve the water for everyone and everything. Steps have already been taken to bring back the salmon population to the Sacramento and the Army Corps of Engineers and other management organizations are looking at overhauling the water management system for the river.

The rest of the list is comprised of rivers across the country, from Georgia to Maryland, to Oregon, Montana and Alaska, each selected for the opportunity that now exists to preserve water quality and water system health. But the only way these rivers will take a turn for the better is with our help, so head on over to the America Rivers site, learn about the rivers in threat, and then take action, because no matter where you live, there’s a river in trouble for you to keep tabs on this summer.
