LK-SkyTowerI had a wonderful time at the recent Travel Classics travel writers conference in New Zealand. While I’ll be writing about nocturnal, flightless birds (which I hunted, optimistically) and the Marlborough Valley’s award-winning Sauvignon Blancs (which I tasted, diligently), this may be your only opportunity to see me (in the photo above) enjoying the thrill New Zealand is best known for: adventure sports.

Pick up a brochure for practically any city or region of New Zealand, and you’ll see there’s lots to do: sky diving, bungy jumping, heli-skiing, caving and canyoneering, white water rafting, kayaking, jet boating, zip lining, off-roading, hiking (“tramping”) and biking. Unfortunately, most of these adventures were a bit too active for me, but I did make it to the top of Auckland’s iconic 328-meter-high Sky Tower, and had a look around.

TravelClassicsWestThe next Travel Classics conference will be in beautiful Scottsdale, Arizona, November 20-23, and registration is now open.
