Forte wins the FanDuel Juvenile

The $2 million FanDuel Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance features 2-year-old colts and geldings going 1 1/16 miles on the main track in a race that usually determines the early Kentucky Derby favorite for next year. American Pharoah (G1) winner Cave Rock was sent off as the 1-2 favorite in the field of 10 over 5-1 second choice Forte, winner of the Breeders Futurity (G1), and 8-1 third choice National Treasure, second in the American Pharoah.

Cave Rock was sent to the front immediately by jockey Juan Hernandez through fractions of 22.90, 47.01, and 1:11.77 while pressed by 70-1 Hurricane J and stalked by 56-1 Curly Jack. In the stretch Cave Rock opened up a 1 1/2 length lead through 1 mile in 1:36.87, but Forte rallied by under Irad Ortiz Jr. to win going away by 1 1/2 lengths in 1:43.06. It was another 2 1/4 lengths back to National Treasure third.

Left: Forte heads out of the tunnel from the paddock to the track. Winning jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. said, "Beautiful trip. I broke good, saved some ground around the first turn and took my time down the backside. I started making my move around turn. I hit him once and he responded. He deserves all the credit."

Right: Forte heads back to the barn. Winning trainer Todd Pletcher said, "He got a beautiful trip. Just kept coming. I think we both got a fair run at it today (referring to being second choice to Cave Rock). He got that two-turn experience (in the Breeders' Futurity) and it paid off today. He's much more professional today. We learned a little something (from the Breeders' Futurity) and we tweaked off the last race and it paid off coming here. Today, if we were lucky enough to get in a position to get (the lead), we wanted to give ourselves plenty of space and not get close to the horse next to him."

Victoria Road wins the Juvenile Turf

The $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) \drew a full field of 14 two-year-olds going 1 mile on the turf, with Autumn (G3) winner Silver Knott sent off as the 7-5 favorite over 5-1 second choice Packs a Wahlop, winner of the Zuma Beach (G3), and 11-2 third choice Victoria Road, winner of the Prix de Conde (G3).

Jockey Francisco Arrieta sent 59-1 Curly Larry and Mo to the lead first time by through fractions of 23.40, 48.29, and 1:13.04 while pressed by 52-1 Mo Stash and stalked by Packs a Wahlop. Turning for home Curly Larry and Mo tired badly allowing Mo Stash to briefly lead through 7f in 1:24.61. Victoria Road, 6th early under Ryan Moore outfinished late-running favorite Silver Knott to win by a nose in 1:35.99. It was another 2 1/4 lengths back to 40-1 Nagirroc third.

Left: Victoria Road circles after the race. Winning jockey Ryan Moore said, "We were in a nice spot when the pace steadied, and we weren't going mad doing the backside. He managed to thread a gap and when he got there, he just moved out a little to the right and just gave everyone a half a chance. This horse has a lot class and he's gotten better as he goes longer. I thought he was sitting on a big race, especially after the draw. He was stepping up in class in his last four races. Hopefully there is more to come next year when he goes to the Classic races."

Right: Victoria Road heads back to the barn after the race. Winning trainer Aidan O'Brien said, "He's been progressing always. Ryan was very patient on him. He's a horse that likes to come late which we learned in the last couple of runs. Obviously, he's Saxon Warrior's first G1 winner, he's from a very fast pedigree. We started him early on over shorter trips and when we started to let him go up in (distance), he just improved and improved. Pace was solid, Ryan had a nice position and knew he was going to be patient. We knew he wasn't going to try and get there too early with him. He's a lovely and nimble horse. He handled the bends very well and handled the nice ground."

Wonder Wheel wins the Juvenile Fillies

The $2 million NetJets Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) features the best 2-year-old fillies going 1 1/16 miles on the main track. After American Rockette scratched, Alcibiades (G1) runner-up Chop Chop was sent off as the 9-4 favorite in the field of 13 over 9-2 second choice Chocolate Gelato, winner of the Frizette (G1), and 6-1 third choice Atomically, winner of the Florida Sires My Dear Girl Stakes.

Jockey Florent Geroux sent 22-1 Grand Love to the lead first time by through fractions of 22.90, 47.22, and 1:12.80 while pressed by 26-1 Leave No Trace and stalked by 8-1 You're My Girl. Turning for home Grand Love tired allowing Leave No Trace to inherit the front through 1 mile in 1:38.63. 13-2 Wonder Wheel, 11th early under Tyler Gaffalione, came out 3 wide for room and rallied to win going away by 3 lengths in 1:44.90. It was another length back to 7-1 Raging Sea third, while favorite Chop Chop trailed throughout finishing last beaten 14 lengths.

Left: Wonder Wheel in the paddock before the race. Winning jockey Tyler Gaffalione said, "She didn't break very well. I got pushed back a little further than I wanted to be. But when she broke her maiden, she took dirt and went in between horses and I wasn't too concerned (today). Spots kept opening up inside so I just going forward and it just worked out."

Right: Wonder Wheel heads back to the barn in her winner's blanket. Winning trainer Mark Casse said, "I was like 'oh my goodness.' She's usually close. I thought 'I can't believe she's not running.' She's tough. There was lots of doubt (that we would win) probably the entire race given the way she has run in the past (running on or near the lead). She is just a really good horse. She is just special and now she is going to be champion."

Meditate wins the NetJets Juvenile Fillies Turf

The $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) featured 14 two-year-old fillies going 1 mile on the turf. Cheveley Park (G1) runner-up Meditate was sent off as the 2-1 favorite over 6-1 second choice Pleasant Passage, winner of the Ms. Grillo (G2), and 7-1 third choice Xigera, 4th in the Alcibiades (G1).

Jockey Ricardo Santana Jr. sent 19-1 Spirit Gal to the lead first time by through fractions of 23.19, 47.60, and 1:12.30 while pressed by 80-1 Manhattan Jungle and stalked by 19-1 Cairo Consort and 9-1 Delight. Entering the stretch, Meditate, 10th early under Ryan Moore, swept to the front through 7f in 1:24.19. Kept to task by Moore, Meditate drew off to win by 2 1/2 lengths over late-running Pleasant Passage in 1:35.38. It was another 2 1/4 lengths back to Cairo Consort third.

Left: Meditate in the post parade. Winning jockey Ryan Moore said, "It's obviously always very hard coming here. Everything needs to go right. No one comes here to get beat. The filly did it very easy and has lots of talent. She hasn't run a bad race all year and gets better with every race. She started well, went hard for a little bit, I was going to be wide and the pace got steady. I followed a horse down the backside and she picked up really well down the stretch. She had them covered with a furlong out and in front pricking her ears. She was much the best."

Right: Meditate heads back to the barn after the race. Winning trainer Aidan O'Brien said, "We had a reason (she didn't win) at the Curragh and a reason for her last race and weren't sure about the mile. Ryan (Moore) gave her a brilliant ride. Michael (Tabor) was very confident that this was the race for her. It's incredible. We came to here to see if she would be a filly for the Guineas. If she wasn't going to get the trip here, we might not train her for the Guineas. Obviously, the result was great. Ryan was very patient."

Mischief Magic wins the Juvenile Turf Sprint

Kicking off the World Championships, the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2) featured a full field of 12 two-year-olds going 5 1/2 furlongs around one turn of the turf. Bolton Landing winner Love Reigns was sent off as the 3-1 favorite over 5-1 second choice Speed Boat Beach, winner of the Speakeasy, and 11-2 third choice Persian Force, third in the Middle Park (G1).

Jockey Kylee Jordan hustled 12-1 Tyler's Tribe to the lead down the backstretch through an opening quarter of 21.65 pressed by Speed Boat Beach and stalked by 52-1 American Apple. On the far turn American Apple gained the lead through a half in 45.11. 13-1 Dramatised, 9th early, came through on the inside to gain a short lead through 5f in 56.67 but 7-1 Mischief Magic, last early under William Buick, rallied on the outside to win by a length in 1:02.41. It was a neck back to 10-1 Private Creed third, while favorite Love Reigns failed to rally finishing 8th beaten 9 1/4 lengths. Tyler's Tribe was eased in the stretch by Jordan and vanned off having bled during the race.

Left: Mischief Magic exits the tunnel on his way to the post parade. Winning jockey William Buick said, "I expected to him to be outpaced early. He's a comfortable closer at six furlongs at home. I knew the 5 1/2 furlongs here with the speed in the race would catch him out early. I knew if I got behind a horse that would take me into the straight, he would finish off real good. He felt super. This is only his sixth race. He's still learning. He enjoys this ground and everything came together for him today."

Right: Mischief Magic heads back to the barn in his new winner's blanket. Winning trainer Charlie Appleby said, "I knew they were going to go hard. From the gate, William is riding in such great form and has so much confidence in his horses. He was just going to get him on his lead. But he made a lovely run (up the backside) and he was trying to angle out and just got pushed back (inside). He didn't do the horse any harm as I said to William, the one thing he wants is to give him gaps. Give him daylight and the old bugger just might have a second chance. Fantastic ride by William and great effort by all the team."

Kicking off the weekend's stakes action was the $350,000 Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Stakes (G2) (formerly run as the Marathon) at 1 5/8 miles on the main track, three turns starting from the Headley chute. Jockey Luan Machado sent 11-2 third choice Next to the lead through fractions of 49.22, 1:14.31, 1:39.54, and 2:05.14 while pressed by 7-1 Bal Harbour and stalked by 4-1 second choice Heywoods Beach. Turning for home, Next opened up a 5 length lead through 1 1/2 miles in 2:29.83, and drew off to win by 6 1/4 lengths over Heywoods Beach in 2:44.59, just 0.02 seconds off the track record. It was another 1 1/4 lengths back to Bal Harbour third, and 6 1/4 more to 9-5 favorite Rattle N Roll fourth.

Winning trainer Doug Cowans said, "This is what you want. This is what you look for as a trainer and hopefully there's more days like this to come. This horse just wants to find a rhythm all the time and once he finds his rhythm he settles in real nice, and you know trying the mile and a half you never know if it'll work but it sure it worked like a charm."
