For issues regarding"LO" [Hayward],"Check Flow" [Jandy]or"Water SW Open" [Raypack/Rheem]displayed on the heater, the issue can likely be traced back to a waterflow issue as opposed to a heater issue. The result of poor flow is the heater will not turn on (this is by design), leading to cold water. To remedy these flow errors, check the following:

  • Pump status: A pump with poor water flow is not circulating water to the heater in a sufficient amount, leading to the aforementioned error messages. A poorly flowing pump can be caused by several factors:
  • De-Primed pump:A well-running pump must be fully primed, water in the viewable portion of the pump must be up to the top of the lid. If the pump is deprimed, turn off the pump, open the lid, fill the pump with a bucket of water, close the lid and restart the pump.
  • Low Water Level Of the Pool:Water level should be maintained between 1/2 - 3/4 the height of the skimmer opening to ensure sufficient water flow to the pump. An underfilled pool will lead to air intake to the pump; de-priming the pump and subsequently the heater will stop. Refill pool to a sufficient level and Re-Prime the pump as described in the above bullet.
  • Clean skimmer basket(s) & pump basket:Obstructed skimmer and/or pump basket(s) can slow water flow into the system. Check these baskets and empty them if they are dirty.
  • Filter status:Poor flow can result from a dirty/clogged filter, with key symptoms being high filter pressure(in relation to the system’s normal operating pressure)and reduced water flow from pool returns. The solution for a filter issue depends on the following filter types:
  • Sand filter:This filter type depends on clean sand to filter incoming water. Filtered materials accumulate in the sand, leading to poor flow over time. Backwashing the filter purges the sand, dislodging trapped debris and flushing them out through the attached waste line(s)/backwash hose(s).Additionally, filter sand should be replaced approximately every 5 years with new sand.
  • Cartridge filter:This filter type relies on filter cartridge(s) to trap contaminants from incoming water. Cartridge filters cannot be backwashed like a sand filter, cartridges must either be removed from the filter and cleaned or replaced completely. There are several ways to clean a filter cartridge, the simplest being power washing, where pressurized water is used to dislodge trapped debris. If power washing your own cartridges, ensure sufficient distance is maintained to prevent damaging the fabric of the cartridge. Other alternatives to power washing are using a filter pleat comb or a chemical-based filter cleaner.

These resolutions assume that all the equipment is serviceable and that the device inside the heater called the “pressure switch” is functional. Sometimes the electrical connections inside the heater become corroded leading to intermittent operation as well. But first we must eliminate all non-heater related possibilities before inviting a costly HVAC technician over to troubleshoot the heater itself. More often than not these error messages are typically describing a water flow issue and not a heater malfunction. These errors are not to be confused with Ignition Failure Errors which are gas, igniter, flame sensor or other gas/heater component malfunctions. This memo is ONLY about these specific errors.

Here are the error messages again. PLEASE NOTE WHICH BRAND OF HEATER YOU HAVE

What would cause a heater to stop working? ›

Clogged Air Filter. Clogged air filters are one of the most common problems for heaters. If your heater cannot blow anything or at least fails to let out hot air, the chances are that your filter is clogged. Filters naturally become clogged as debris builds up in them.

How do you fix a heater that won't heat? ›

Change the Furnace Filter

Dirty filters are the most common cause of furnace problems. Dust and dirt restrict airflow—and if the filter gets too clogged, the heat exchanger will overheat and shut off too quickly, and your house won't warm up. If the blower is running but no heat is coming out, replace the filter.

Why is the heat not kicking on in my house? ›

The cause of your furnace not blowing hot air could be the thermostat configuration, a dirty air filter, the high limit switch, a clogged condensate line, insufficient fuel, leaky ducts, ignition problems, a blocked burner, flame sensor issues, gas valve malfunctions, a cracked heat exchanger, or a clogged coil.

Why does my thermostat kick on but no heat? ›

A clogged filter can prevent air from flowing into your heating system and cause it to stop working. Oftentimes, switching out your dirty air filter with a clean one can restore heat to your home.

Why did my heater stop all of a sudden? ›

Clogged Air Filter

This is one of the most frequent causes of trouble in an HVAC system. If the filter is heavily clogged with dust and debris, it may cause the furnace to shut off as a safety precaution. Fortunately, this is a basic problem to solve—just put in a clean filter.

Why is my heat not blowing hot air in my house? ›

Check your thermostat's batteries and replace any that are exhausted or defective. Clean all of the parts of your furnace, especially the ones that are susceptible to dust and dirt. You could also hire HVAC technicians to clean the system thoroughly. Ensure that the gas valve is open and not obstructed by any debris.

Can thermostat cause heater not work? ›

A malfunctioning thermostat can make your heater or air conditioner unable to turn on. In most cases, this indicates the wiring has failed. Normally, electrical wires transmit messages from the thermostat to the HVAC unit, such as telling it when to turn on and what temperature to make your house feel.

Why is my heater running but no heat coming out? ›

This can occur if there's a malfunction in the furnace's components, such as a faulty limit switch or a blocked heat exchanger. In such cases, it's crucial to consult a professional HVAC technician for a thorough inspection and necessary repairs.

What causes your heat to stop working? ›

Clogged or dirty filters can wear out the electrical components that keep the warm air blowing through your home's air vents. They can also “choke out” your system and make it stop working. If your heater isn't able to take in enough air, it causes problems and may cause it to overheat and shutdown.

Why is my thermostat not turning on heat? ›

The thermostat may have a dead battery, so replace them with fresh ones and try again. Your furnace may turn on right away after this. If it doesn't, you may have a faulty power circuit. Have an HVAC professional diagnose this issue, and provide you with professional recommendations.

Why is heating not coming on? ›

Check your Thermostats!

Sometimes the problem can be related to your thermostat, which may not be set to the ideal temperature settings. If the thermostat is set too low, the heating will not come on until the room temperature is lower than the temperature you set.

Why wont my thermostat kick the heat on? ›
