How is Angie coping with the death of Olga? ›

Angie is still in the throes of grief. Though Julia—and even her parents—have managed to pull themselves together, Angie's still deeply disturbed. This signals to readers—and to Julia—that she is processing Olga's death in a different way, and perhaps knows something more that's contributing to her hopeless state.

When it's time for Julia to pay the check, the waitress tells her it's already been taken care of by a fellow patron who overheard their conversation.

As Julia tries to cope with her sister's death and her parents' expectations, she begins to explore her own identity. She starts to question her sister's perfection and the secrets Olga kept. Julia's journey of self-discovery leads her to make new friends, including a boy named Connor, and to explore her sexuality.

Julia reluctantly participates in her quinceañera to please her family, but she gets into an argument with one of her aunts. Amá reprimands her and angrily blames her for Olga's death.

She suspects that her mother, in a way, blames her for Olga's death, and listening to her mother saying these words intensifies the depression that Julia is already suffering since it confirms her suspicion. These words, to me, make things worse and finally bring Julia to the point of trying to kill herself.

Everyone believed Olga was the perfect daughter, one who attended church and community college classes, had no social life and never shamed the family. But when Julia discovers skimpy underwear, a hotel key and love notes in Olga's room, she wonders what secrets her sister was keeping.

Amidst all this, Julia finds out Olga wasn't as perfect as everyone had thought. In fact, she hadn't been enrolled in any college classes for a while, she had been having an affair with a married man, and she was pregnant with his child.

All of her entries, poems, and stories are gone. Amá also finds the lingerie, room key, and note. Julia is unable to tell her truth about these items –that they belonged to Olga, not her– so Amá takes her phone away, grounds her and locks her out of Olga's room.

Julia gets out of bed and begins going through Olga's closet. She finds old pictures and clothes stuffed in boxes—but in one box, finds a cache of sexy underwear.

Castillo tells Julia that he truly loved Olga—and that when Julia's older, she'll be able to understand just how complicated things were between them. Julia asks Dr. Castillo how old he is, and he says he's forty-six. Julia tells him that he's older than her and Olga's father.
